      - The added silt and flood waters often destroyed the land.
        
        Sumerian farmers developed a series of canals and dikes to help control the floodwaters, channeling them to their fields.
        
        This process required teamwork and collaboration, leading to the rise of the first civilization.
        
        As people worked together to control the floodwaters, they formed themselves into small villages. Before long, the villages grew into towns, and eventually into larger City-States.
        
        People began to compete with one another for resources and water and thus, Sumer never unified. It was always comprised of independent City-States until it was later conquered.

        The early leaders of the cities were priests
        
        Religion was POLYTHEISTIC, meaning that people were worshipping more than one god. Priests performed rituals to appease the gods
        
        Kings came from the priesthood. Their authority and powers derived from the gods.
