Merchant Class Shifts the Social Order
Merchants + craftspeople didn't fit into traditional medieval social order.
This included noble, clergy, and peasants.
Burghers - merchant class town dwellers
They first were under authority of feudal lords that used there power for imposing fees, taxes, and rents .
From the expansion of trade, the burghers resented the interference that was happening to their trade
Burghers organized and demanded privileges that included freedom from certain kinds of tolls + right to govern
Burghers woulf fight there landlords for there rights and would win.
Why wouldn't merchants and craftspeople be apart of the social order when they're higher in class then peasants?

Trade and Towns Grow Together
Trade bright people into towns
The streets of these cities were VERY dirty with human and animal waste
Surfs that ran away from their manors could become free if they lived in towns for a year and a day
Trade: Trade made people want to come into these towns which then greatly helped the economy
When did waste systems like sewers become a thing in these towns?
How many people got sick and or died from the lack of hygiene?
