Structure and Function of Cells
nucleus
A nucleus, as related to genomics, is the membrane-enclosed organelle within a cell that contains the chromosomes.
chromosmes
Chromosomes are thread-like structures located inside the nucleus of animal and plant cells
Cell Wall
The cell wall surrounds the plasma membrane of plant cells and provides tensile strength and protection against mechanical and osmotic stress.
Cell Membrane
The cell membrane, also called the plasma membrane, is found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment.
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is the gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell.
vacuole
A vacuole is a membrane-bound cell organelle. In animal cells, vacuoles are generally small and help sequester waste products. In plant cells, vacuoles help maintain water balance. Sometimes a single vacuole can take up most of the interior space of the plant cell.
Chloroplasts
A chloroplast is an organelle within the cells of plants and certain algae that is the site of photosynthesis
Mitochondrion
Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles
Nucleolus
The nucleolus is the largest nuclear organelle and is the primary site of ribosome subunit biogenesis in eukaryotic cells
Flagellum
Flagellum is primarily a motility organelle that enables movement and chemotaxis.
