Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to monitor learning and provide feedback for students. These assessments are low stakes and are done either formally or informally.
EX: Quizes Given within a unit to gauge where student strengths and misconceptions of newly learned content lay.
EX: Exit tickets given at the end of a lesson to gather information on student retention of a newly learned concept.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments can also be thought of as a pre-assessment that is used to determine student strengths and weakness. This information is in turn used to adjust instruction to cater to students skill level

EX: Bell Ringer given at the start of class as an entry activity going over the prerequisite skills for the days lesson.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment require students to preform or apply their understanding through means other than tests.

EX: Digital Portfolios a compilation of work done by a student that show cases his/hers overall growth and mastery of a topic
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to adjust instruction like formative assessments, however, they also hold a higher weight to them grade wise.

EX: STAAR given in the state of Texas at certain grade level for the collection of data on student knowlegde
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are an end of unit or end of year assessment cumulating the topic students have learned in a given period of time. This is used as a final report of overall growth and retention in a course or unit.
EX: Midterms an exam given at the halfway point of a year to collect data on student skill level of previously learned material
EX: Unit Tests given at the end a unit to gather data on overall student achievement in a specific unit
