Summative: A summative assessment is an assessment that evaluates student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against standards or benchmarks.
Examples: Exams- Final exams can be given at the end of an instructional unit or end of the year. They are used to assess student knowledge over a longer instructional period.
Example: Final Projects/Presentations- Students have to create and present a project that covers the knowledge they have learned from an instructional unit.

Formative: A formative assessment is an assessment that is made to monitor student learning throughout a unit and will provide teachers feedback on how to guide their instruction.
Examples: Venn Diagram- Students will compare and contrast two topics/subjects using a venn diagram.
Example: Exit Ticket- Students will complete a short exit ticket that will test what they learned that day.

Interim/Benchmark: Interim/Benchmark assessments are assessments that are administered to students throughout the school year. They monitor student growth and achievement based on learning goals and standards.
Example: District Assessments- A curriculum based test that gathers data about student knowledge and progress over a specific unit.
Example: STAAR- Standardized tests in the state of Texas that assess a student's knowledge learned in the grade level.

Example: Diagnostic assessments use sets of written questions to assess a student's current knowledge base or views on the topic being studied in the course.
Example: Discussion Boards- Students will be expected to answer a question on a discussion board. The teacher can create the topic of the discussion board and can require students to reply to other discussion posts.
Example: KWL Chart- Students will be expected to explain what they know, what they want to know, and what they will learn.

Performance: An assessment that requires students to demonstrate directly what they know and can do.
Example: Open-Ended Questions- Students will answer open-ended questions which require them to answer with an explanation rather than a yes/no answer.
Example: Science Experiment-Students will design and conduct a science experiment that demonstrates an understanding of content knowledge.
