Merchant Class Shifts the Social Order
Did not fit into the traditional medieval social order (noble, clergy, peasant)
Towns were under the authority of feudalism
As trade expanded the merchant-class town dwellers resented feudalism because of the interference it had on their trade
They organized themselves and demanded privileges
The rights included freedom and the right to govern the town. At times they had to fight against their own landlords

Trade started rising in the Middle Ages
New towns came together which sprung up ports, crossroads, hilltops, and along rivers
Caused population to increase
Some drawbacks from living in the medieval towns was streets were narrow and filled with animals and there waste.
Human waste built up in the streets, houses lacked fresh air, water light ect.
Many serfs were fed up and decided to run away.
Many of them became free

What attracted europeans to towns in the Middle Ages?
European towns were unsophisticated and tiny compared to grate cities like Constantinople.
Europeans were attracted to these towns for work and trade
Scholars estimated that between 1000 and 1150, the population of Western Europe rose from around 30 million to 42 million.
Typical town in medieval Europe had only about 1,500 to 2,500 people. Even so, these small communities became powerful forces for change in Europe.
