In 1846, the potato crop not only
failed again, but failed much more severely.
1846 marked the start of mass starvation and death.

British response
In
January 1847, the British Government set up free soup kitchen
the famine in August 1847.
This
decision had a calamitous impact
killed thousands of Irish people.
Impact of the famine
It has been calculated that at least 1 million people,
or about 15% of the population died, mostly from
disease, during the famine.
The famine caused mass migration, as about 2 million people
which continued throughout the 19th and
early 20th centuries,
dramatic impact on the Irish population,
which fell from about 8 million in
1840 to about 4 million in 1900.
