Reading Response 4 - Freedom, Liberty, and Deeper Thinking
“Why Critics of Angry Woke College Kids Are Missing the Point” by Marchese/Brown
Academic settings are overrun by right narrative of "wokeness."
WHY?
Campuses are being politicized! Certain spaces are for certain conversations, not all education and constructive conversations have to be political.
THE LIMITATIONS: Learning is about discovering your own truths of the world. If there is politics and leftish and rightist ideas being introduced into all ideas then students are only going to identify with those categories.
There is a generation gap between what the young and old qualify as free speech and where it is appropriate
There is a loss of spaces for students to freely speak. How can we give students a tolerant, respectful, and civil area for free speech but appropriately limit certain speech that is not for educational spaces?
If there is a loss of places to freely speak there is a loss of thought and critical thinking about some topics.
Rights and education are controlled by the people funding it.
On campus people get caught up in conversations about cancel culture and "wokeness" that they are blind to the fact that the people perpetuating this language are funding the school. They are part of right wing foundations and groups.
SOLUTION: Students must try our their ideas in class but not have them seen as politics
Academic freedom vs freedom of speech: how these ideas conflict and is free speech a part of academic freedom?
Students must have dialogues about freedom and keep questioning the narratives in place because it is important for students to understand what freedom and free speech means to them.
John Stuart Mills' excerpt
The only time one can impede on individual liberty is if another person is in harm
The government/law cannot take away an individuals rights or liberties under the basis that they say it is for the benefit of the public.
Holding discussion is important in maintaining a free and equal society.
There are many positive interactions that can protect and benefit other individuals, not causing harm.
One must not stay silent if there is another person in harm or is harming another one.
Individual liberty can be divided into three groups.
There should be a freedom of thought and opinion.
There should be a freedom to do what you want a suit your life to how you feel fit with your personality.
There should be freedom to unite and be with other individuals if you are not harming others.
Ideas and sharing is good. Conformity can hinder progression to form a better society.
“Metacognition Is Not Cognition” by Howard Tinberg
Thinking about how to solve a problem (cognition) is different from the analysis of why we made those decisions to solve that problem
Cognition allows writers to apply their knowledge and thought to effectively answer a question or fulfill requirements
A writer will produce critical and effective writing with this.
Must work together to produce a performance that is thoughtful, digestible, and communicates one's points well.
Without opposition or a balance of two sides, good work cannot be effectively produced. Cognition and metacognition together allow for deeper thinking.
Metacognition allows writers to see beyond the writing and look into the steps that are required to produce the writing.
Gives writers a control over their work. Personalizes work.
