Letter Writing - Bear Hunt
Problems faced when trying to find the bear, what could be improved about the language/literary devices, and what could be improved about the ending.
Problems: - Leo was slipping on the ice
Heavy snowfall that hindered their ability to catch the bear and exhausted them
Leo’s showshoe got stuck in the shrub
Bear walked backwards to confuse hunters
At the end, Leo sees a large black figure moving on the snow, which is most likely the bear who has dicovered their camping site.
Exhaustion (towards the end)
What could be improved about the literary devices/language:
The language is fairly simple and doesn’t include many figurative devices.
For example, the second to last sentence is, “I peered out carefully between the tall fir trees, and saw, some fifty paces away, something big and black.”
Instead of “tall” and “big”, they could’ve used synonyms such as towering for tall or colossal - or used a figurative device to describe the figure. Eg: An immense black shadow engulfed all the light we recieved from the moon.
How the ending can be improved: The ending is pretty good because it includes suspense and a plot twist (as they thought they were safely away from the bead but instead the bear had found them), however, they could have included more figurative devices such as metaphors or personification.
