On Education and Critical Thinking
It is important to have a diversity of political opinions on college campuses, as this will help prepare students for the political landscape of this country.
However, we also need to speak out against hate speech in order to create a place where this diversity can flourish.
Hate speech is not free speech because it conflicts with the freedom of others.
That being said, free speech is also very important in the university setting.
Many of the Republican party's efforts to "protect free speech" actually limit it.
We must make sure we know what specifically qualifies as hate speech vs. free speech.
We also need to make sure students know how to respond to people they disagree with in a civil manner.
This was defined by John Stuart Mills in "On Liberty".
There is a difference between academic freedom and free speech.
Academic freedom means freedom from external interference with one's teachings.
The hyper politicization (and, in turn, polarization) of the university system has become a threat to academic freedom.
Free speech is an individual right for the civil and public sphere.
Individuals are sovereign over their own bodies, actions, thoughts, and speech.
The only case in which society can rightfully exert power over an individual is if it causes harm to others.
This does not apply to those who cannot take care of themselves.
If we allow society to continue stretching its boundaries over individuals, things will only continue to get worse.
In order to be truly free, citizens must be educated about the society that they live in.
A good citizen must take action to promote good in the world.
If you do not take action against injustice, you are partly responsible for it.
It is also important to separate religious beliefs from the workings of government.
We must be aware of how someone's life experiences may have led up to their current actions.
The ability to express one's opinions by writing and publishing them is a human right.
However, if these opinions cause serious harm to others, they will be rightfully subject to scrutiny.
Any society that does not grant this freedom to its members is not truly free.
Instead of trying to get everyone to agree with us, we should focus more on understanding others' points of view.
There is a difference between knowing that we think and knowing what we think.
Cognition is the process of acquiring and applying knowledge..
Cognitive processes include asking questions and demonstrating concepts.
Metacognition is the ability to outline the steps of one's thinking.
It is often described as "thinking about thinking".
People often think that one must only need cognition in order to teach (especially at the university level), but cognition is only effective when accompanied by metacognition.
