Interim/Benchmark
A project scored with a rubric is an example of an interim or benchmark assessment. Teachers are able to see if students have an understanding and have met the academic standards requested of them.
A chapter test is another example of a benchmark assessment. A chapter test would be given throughout the year upon completion of chapters. There will be set academic standards that teachers wish for students to meet.
A paper is a type of summative assessment and allows students to use critical thinking to show what they have learned. Papers normally have standards that they want students to meet and gives students a direction of what teachers are looking for.
A final project is a summative assessment as they are normally given at the end of a unit. A final project allows the teacher to evaluate everything that students have learned over this time period. A summative assessment is something you want to do well on to prove your understanding.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are a more relaxed way of checking for students understanding on a specific topic. This type of assessment provides teachers with instant feedback and allows them to modify future instruction if needed. These assessments are not given to provide students with a grade, but more to inform the educator of possible misconceptions that students might have.
KWL Chart: A KWL chart is where students are instructed to write down some things that they know, wonder, and lastly things that they have learned. Students could also draw illustrations to help explain their thinking. This would be given to students after instruction.
Venn Diagram: Students are instructed to compare and contrast a topic using a Venn diagram. Students could also draw illustrations to help explain their thinking.
A debate or speech is an example of a performance assessment as students are given more flexibility to demonstrate and share what they know through an open ended task.
Constructing an answer is a performance assessment as students are showing their knowledge by explaining their thoughts to an open ended question. They are not just answering questions like a quiz.
Diagnostic
A survey is one type of diagnostic assessment. Surveys allow students to show what they know before starting a unit. This could act as a pre-assessment.
A discussion board allows students to show their strengths and weaknesses through posting a response.
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are given throughout a school year to monitor student growth and progress. These assessments help teachers identify whether students are where they should be and on track with academic standards.

Definition: Summative assessments are often high stakes and cover a wide range of material, not just one topic. Summative assessments are used to evaluate students learning during the closure of a unit.
