What impacts did external development have on Singapore as a port city?
Suez canal was opened in 1869, the journey took at least 50 days (but 120 days through the Cape of good hope)
Increased trade, more ships pass through Singapore
caused the increased use of steam ships (sailing ships cannot pass through the Suez canal through out the year)
enhancing Singapore as a coaling station
lower shipping cost, saving of time
How did the British develop Singapore into a port city?
Free port status
traders do not need to pay tax
Transshipment: transfer goods from one trading ship to another while in transit
Entrepot: repackage and redistribute goods

Singapore is a growing population, lacking in funds to improve facilities
gambling, opium and liquor were taxed
gambling was banned and tax could no longer be collected
EIC gave money but stopped when they lost dominant control of trade with China
EIC lost interest in the straits settlements, so they refused to give Singapore money
