Reincarnation of Madeline - Coggle Diagram
Reincarnation of Madeline
Mise En Scene
Half Lighting
Connotes a secret side to Judy that we haven't seen yet
Creation of the sex object
Blue colouring
Connotes the sadness and isolation Judy feels under his control
How Kim Novak feels under Hitchcocks control?
Lighting changes as he looks out the window
Blue lighting makes her appear faded, like a ghost resurrecting
Lighting isn't perfect when she first walks in - lots of shadow - disappointed - hard to make out her facial features - lighting highlights the problem, the hair not being pinned back
Green in the mirror - the uncanny - GHOST! Duplicity, deviousness and envy
Green is the saturated colour which represents Judy - dress in the opening serves as a clue
Performance
Scotty looks distressed, getting his erection
Judy void of emotion upon leaving the bathroom
Scotty goes snooping through her belongings
He is restless thinking about what she will come back as
He is dissapointed and the first thing that he is notices is the imperfections of it even though she is completely transformed from who she was before
He turns away in dread whilst she is so infaturated with him that she keeps kissing him with no objection even though he is barely putting the full effort in
Roles reversed - scotty tall and proud with Judy hunched over
Sound
Orchestral emotive score
Violins build over the actions on screen
Crescendo as his erection comes to a climax
Low rumbles show him hyping himself up
Instruments are distorted
Soundtrack represents Scotty breaking Judy and pulling Madeline from the pieces
Silent - she is no longer fighting him anymore
Cinematography
Side profile
Low angle on Judy shows how small and powerless she is in comparison to everyone else
Makes us feel the same way that she does
Close ups on the makeup highlighting the changes
Judy slightly out of focus represents her turning into madeline
Silhouette on the doorway as Judy goes in
Slow pan around them kissing - he relives the last moments that he spent chasing madeline alive
Incorrect framing / profile - different to other romanticised memories
Similar to intro but she doesn't pause and she is walking in the other way in compared to the opening
Over the shoulder - male gaze - his desire is more important than her identity and sense of self - we are looking down at her
Hitchcock builds suspense by keeping the camera on Scotty, building suspense
Track / tilt - now we are looking up at him
Editing
Continuity - invisible cuts
Fade out represents time passing
Oversaturated when she leaves the bathroom
Fade to black - time passing - change of clothes - sex
Faded film effect when she leaves the bathroom
360 background change takes him back to when he last kissed Madeline
Judy
Feels isolated and manipulated
Forced into phoning sick at work
'I just want you to look nice'
'I know the suit that would make you look nice'
Gaslit into believing that she does not want to go
Gives him the happiest days of this year
'Wouldn't you like me? Just me?'
'I don't care anymore about me'
The end of her defiance
Scotty
Let me look after you
Flower - picks the one he likes as opposed to the one she likes
Forces her into outfits that she does not like
The women don't see a problem with how he treats her
'Do it for me!'
'Drink this straight down'
Rewriting the woman is what Hitchcock does with his leading ladies
Changes hair colour 'It can't matter to you'
Forces her by the fire like she was sat after the bridge incident
Can only get a boner once he has broken the woman
