U-shaped Valley +
Hanging Valley +
Ribbon Loch
Formation
Corries conditions,plucking, abrasion
Gravity causes the glaciers to flow downhill. ✔
They will follow the existing V-shaped valleys. ✔
Former interlocking spurs ✔ may be cut off by the glacier as it flows downhill leaving truncated spurs ✔ and steep valley sides
An example of a U-shaped valley is Glen Coe
Hanging Valley
A hanging valley is made by a tributary glacier, which eroded more slowly than the main glacier. ✔
When it melted, it was left hanging above the main valley floor and can often contain a waterfall.
Ribbon Loch
Ribbon lakes can form where softer bedrock is eroded more deeply than the surrounding area ✔
An example is Lake Windermere
