What is the Solar System like?
The Sun
-The
Sun
is a star.
-It is roughly spherical in shape.
The planets, asteroids and comets orbit the Sun.
-It is much, larger than the Earth.
-It provides the
heat
and
light
that make life possible on Earth.
Planets
-
Planets
are large, spherical celestial bodies.
-They travel around a star in a curved path called an
orbit
.
The eight planets:
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
and
Neptune
.
-
Satellites
are objets in orbit around a planet.
Dwarf planets
-
Dwarf planets
are celestial bodies that orbit stars.
-Most of them are spherical in shape
Asteroids
-
Asteroids
are large rocks that orbit the Sun.
-They are mainly found in the
asteroid belt
and in the
Kuiper belt
Comets
-
Comets
are balls of dust and ice that orbit the Sun.
-the ice melts as the comet gets closer to the Sun, producing its ''tail''
