Taylor Rivas' Assessments
Formative
Definition:
A formative assessment is used to monitor student learning as it is happening. These help teachers receive student feedback and adjust teaching and planning before moving on to a new part of the lesson.
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down:
This is a form of formative assessment where the teacher gauges student understanding by having them point their thumb up or down. If students are fully understanding the content, they will put their thumbs up to show they are ready to move on. If the students are unsure, they can put their thumbs to the side to say that they understand but may need some help before moving on. If the student does not understand the content, they will put their thumbs down to show they are not ready to move on. The teacher can use this quick formative assessment to determine if they need to reteach or can move on.
Quick Checks:
This formative assessment helps the teacher assess the students on what they learned during that lesson. This helps the teacher determine the students' understanding of that topic and helps guide the next lesson.
Diagnostic
Definition:
This type of assessment helps teachers receive data about a particular area for a student. It provides the information needed to understand a student's strengths and weaknesses.
Where to Start Word Test:
This test is used to see what words the student can read with automaticity. Depending on the words read correctly for each level, the teacher can get a general idea of what reading level the student is on.
ISIP:
This assessment is used to break down the data for a student's reading abilities. The teacher can see the needs for each student as it gives the data for their strengths and weaknesses each month. This data helps to guide the teacher's instructions for the class.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition:
An interim/benchmark is used to determine if the student's learning is where it is supposed to be at that time. It is also used to monitor student growth and guide student learning.
MAP Testing:
This test is given at the beginning, middle, and end of the year (usually labeled as BOY, MOY, and EOY). The student has reading and math goals that determine if they have growth between the testing dates.
Weekly Spelling Tests:
These tests gauge the student's progress in spelling for each week. They measure the student's growth and patterns in their spelling habits which can help the teachers determine the appropriate feedback and help that they need.
Performance
Definition:
This assessment has the students demonstrate what they know about a topic. It is used to improve a student's learning experience as well as their application of the information that is taught.
Istation:
This is an ongoing computerized performance assessment. Each test/activity is tailored to the needs of the students based on their performance. The activities for each student's performance matches to their abilities, which means teachers are able to see each individual student's strengths and weaknesses.
Portfolios:
A portfolio is a collection of student work over the course of a certain time period. This helps the audience (or the teacher) see the student's growth and progress over a period of time.
Summative
Definition:
A summative assessment is used to evaluate what the student earned at the end of an instructional period and compares the scoring of the students to that of a standard or benchmark.
Unit Exam:
This exam is given at the end of an instructional period. It is used to evaluate what the student learned during the unit and the information that was retained.
Final Exam:
A final exam can be given at the end of a semester or the entire school year. It is used to evaluate what the student learned during that entire semester/year and what information was learned.
