Aspect Oppositions
Definition
Aspect: A grammatical category that expresses the temporal flow and completion of an action or state, indicating how the action unfolds over time.
Simple Aspect
Definition: Describes a single, completed action.
Example: She wrote a letter.
Characteristics:
Indicates an action that happened at a specific point in time.
Often used for short, punctual actions.
Continuous (Progressive) Aspect
Definition: Describes an ongoing, continuous action.
Example: She is writing a letter.
Characteristics:
Indicates an action that is in progress during a specific period.
Emphasizes the duration or temporary nature of an action.
Perfect Aspect
Definition: Indicates an action's completion or its relevance to a later point in time.
Example: She has written a letter.
Characteristics:
Emphasizes the result of an action.
Often used with time expressions like "since," "for," or "already."
Perfect Continuous Aspect
