Case Study: Maghreb
Culture
Despite its French intervention, the region is heavily influenced by islamic beliefs,
Although French is not an official language in this region, its colonial context makes it a widely spoken language, alongside Arabic and Berber.
Having three major standing points, Islamic, Berber and French, results in many cultural aspects, such as architecture, gastronomy, dance and art being influenced by the three of them.
Its culture has been shaped my many groups, Berbers, Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, and French, making the place extremely historically diverse
Author: Edward Said
When we are examining the impact of French and Spanish colonialism in their literature and language and many more aspects one can conclude that the term that Edward uses "Orientalism" and his critique of Western representations of the East can be some what relevant.
Edwards example "Orientalism" can be used to dive in on how writers engaged with cultural hybridity and the blending of different cultural elements in their works. We can see how their literature of this period often reflects the complex interactions between Arabic, French, Spanish, and indigenous Berber cultures.
Said's work can be used to analyze how Moroccan literature, influenced by both Western and Arabic literary traditions, circulated globally.
Post Colonialism
Post colonialism is a response to colonialist thought. It is a rejoinder to colonialism's narratives, social hierarchies and power structures.
Retrieves knowledge from before the colonial period such Berber languages, classical Arabic and other literary traditions.
The case is an element of the post colonial theory since they where isolated by the French and they gained independence in 1956.
Post colonialism traces the kind of responses that came from the people being colonized and how they represent themselves. In this case they the changes that created the modern Maghrib were deeply affected by indigenous thought and practice as much as by the colonial state and its policies(Etty Terem, 2021)
Maghreb after its colonization was inaugurated by the sand war which was the first significant territorial dispute(Basma, 2022).
Regional context and the trans-imperial connections are variables that also play an important role in the making of modern identities (Etty Terem, 2021)
The colonizers of Magreb translated their culture and language into the colonized and it was used to introduce them into the linguistic and cultural norms of the dominant nation. This represents issues of identity, difference and power(Tarek, 2009).
Empire
The study discusses how the Maghreb was under control by various empires including the French and Spanish colonial empires. The arrival of such influences in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries impacted the linguistic and cultural landscapes of Magreb.
In response to the linguistic imperialism, the region of Maghreb reflects linguistic diversity, which shows the resistance but also the adaptation of colonial influences. The people in the region developed a “multilingual scene”.
According to Turner (2005), a most accepted definition of power is: "the capacity for influence".
The Spanish and French colonial powers heavily impacted the linguistics of the people in Maghreb. For example, the French imposing their language as the only one for education shows how imperialistic power comes into play with language.
