Small Windows
Small and sparse windows allowed the walls to support a massive ceiling.
Thick Stone Walls
Having thick stone walls was important for holding up such a heavy ceiling and keeping the building sturdy.
Rounded Arches
Rounded arches were used to create emphasis and grandeur around doorways and throughout the building.
Large Buildings
Buildings were large and fortress-like to help with structural integrity and more space allowed for more people to visit.
Gothic Architecture
Stained Glass Windows
Stained glass windows let in much more natural light and filled the building with beautiful hues. The depictions on windows also told stories.
Flying Buttresses
Flying buttresses supported the building from the outside and were very beautiful and detailed.
Ribbed Vaulting
Ribbed vaulting was functional because it gave more structure to the walls and it was also highly decorative
Tall & Thin Walls
Tall and thin walls gave the buildings a light and spacious feel. Thin walls allowed for the buildings to reach great heights.
