The Cell and Microscope

Living organisms are made up of things called cells.

Parts of an animal cell

Cell membrane - controls movement in and out of the cell

Cytoplasm - a jelly like substance that contains all of the parts

Mitochondria - where energy is released from nutrients through respiration

Vacuoles - contains waste from the cell

Nucleus - carries DNA and is the brain of the cell

Parts of a plant cell

Cell wall - made of a tough substance called cellulose which supports the cell

Mitochondria - where energy is released from nutrients through respiration

Cell membrane - controls movement in and out of the cell

Nucleus - carries DNA and is the brain of the cell

Large vacuole - contains a liquid called cell sap that keeps the cell firm and holds nutrients

Cytoplasm - a jelly like substance that contains all of the parts

Chloroplast - this is where the plant makes food using a process called photosynthesis

Light Microscope

Parts of a microscope

Uses a series of lenses to magnify an object.

Objective lens - each objective lens has a different magnification

Nose piece - can move different objective lenses into place.

Fine focus knob - used for delicate focusing on high power

Stage - part where you place the slide

Course focus knob - used to see an object on a low magnification

Clip - to hold the slide in place on the stage

Eyepiece - the lens nearest to your eye and magnifies objects 10x

Light - to shine light up through the object to see

Eyepiece magnification x objective lens magnification = total magnification
