Assessments
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used before the material is taught to see what the students already know and what they are having trouble with. This gives the teacher an indicator of what they will need to focus in on during the unit.
Pre-Assessment: These are a great way to see what your students already know before starting the unit. If they all master one area, you would not hone in on that. You would focus on things they did not do well with.
KWL Chart: This shows the teacher what the students Know, what they Want to know, and at the end of the unit what the Learned.

Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments are anything that the teacher can use to show students learning that is not taken as a grade. These are usually quick checks that give the teacher feedback in order to adjust instruction.
Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down: The teacher can ask a series of questions using the thumbs up or thumbs down method. She scans the room real quickly to see who is correct/incorrect and can even talk about the right answer after. For example, "thumbs up or thumbs down: 7 + 8 = 13?"
Bell Ringer: Students will be asked a question on the topic they learned the day before to see if they understood or need to go back over it. For example, when learning addition with regrouping, you can ask: "What is 6 + 7?" for a Bell Ringer. This will give you a quick indication of who understands and who needs more help. It is not usually taken for a grade!
Interim/Benchmark
Interim/Benchmark Assessments are used to see if students are on track for success. These may be taken multiple times throughout the year or just once at the end.
MAP: These are taken three times a year (BOY, MOY, and EOY) to see where students are in their learning and how they are progressing.
State Testing: In Texas, the STAAR test is taken at the end of grades in different subjects per grade to show student growth throughout the year.
Summative
Definition: Summative Assessments are taken at the end of a lesson or unit and are taken for a grade. They are used to collect data, not adjust instruction.

Final Exam: Final exams are used to show what the students learned over the entirety of the class (whether that's a semester or a full year).
Performance
Definition: During a Performance Assessment, students are asked to show what they know by doing instead of taking a test or quiz.
Project: Students will be asked to make a building from a specific time period (one they just learned about) with guidelines like what kinds of materials to use, how big, etc. This shows they learned about the kinds of buildings built during that era.
Catapult: Instead of taking a unit test over catapults and how they work, the teacher can ask students to build a catapult from items they have at home and get to launch them during the class period. This will show they learned how catapult's work and they will not have to take a test to show it.
