What Gig Economy is?
work based on app platforms that dole out work in bits
making deliveries
driving passengers
cleaning homes
= "platform economy"
but work can be for traditional companies (no tech startup)
represents around 1.3 million Britons
Gig-economy work = zero-hour contracts
treat workers as contractors
offer no guarantee of pay
paid per piece (gig economy)
paid hourly, no set minimum (zero-hours contracts)
results of companies trying to cut staffing costs
workers unsure how much they'll earn
Problem with the Gig economy
companies said "more flexibility" but not true for the workers
pressure/incentive
for holiday or sick, no pay.
some aren't making minimum wage
£2.50 an hour (MP Frank Field)
loss at billions of pounds a year for government (earn less in taxes,...)
How can these issues be fixed?
government should create "dependent contractor"
more benefits which came with this new statu
wage protections
common worker's rights
sick pay
maternity pay
