Unit 15 - Inheritance
Transcription
- The DNA unwinds and bonds between complementary bases break and the two strands separate
- One of the separated strands acts as a template and the RNA bases bond to the exposed DNA bases
- there is no T for the mRNA so this is replaced by U uracsil
- The mRNA detaches from the DNA and goes to the ribosome in the cytoplasm
- The original strands join back together and the DNA molecules winds back into the helix
-
- 3 bases on mRNA is known as a codon
- Each codon codes for one amino acid in the protien
- Each bases in only read once - non-overlapping
GENE 1 - TTATTGTTTACATAACTTTGATGC
mRNA sequence - AAUAACAAUGUAUUGAAACUACG
Amino Acid - ANS ASN SER VAL LEU LSY LEU THR
Genes
-
- DNA is made of two linked strands that wind around each other to resemble a twisted ladder (double helix)
- A section of DNA codes for one protein which is known as a gene
RNA vs DNA
DNA - 2 strands with the bases TCAG (Thymine, Cystocine, Adenine and Guanine
RNA - I strand with the bases UCAG (Uracil, cytosine, Adenine and Guanine)
Variation
- the difference between individuals characteristics
Environmental: - tattoos, religion and piercings
Genetics: - nose shape, blood group, eye colour and gender
Translation
- The process in which mRNA is read and translated into a protein
- mRNA is read in base pairs of threes = one codon
- Translation occurs in the ribosome
- This process involves another type of RNA molecule known as the transfer RNA or tRNA
