Citizen participation, equality & inclusion for everyone, accountability from elected officials, consent of the governed and freedom from unwarranted government interference & deprivation. Others include: multi-party system, political tolerance, free and fair elections, acceptance of election results and control over abuse.
Democracy should make sure we have these rights: bill of rights (constitutionally enshrined) & human rights, right to life and liberty, rights of minority groups and voting rights.
