An example of the importance of family. Sheafson goes from a foundling to a ruler and is well-known and generally respected. His son, Beow, inherits his reputation, as well as the kingdom. Both of their reputations are passed down to Halfdane and then Hrothgar, who builds a mead hall, Heorot.
Danes
Swedes and Danes now occupy Sweden and Denmark. Are these groups in the book ancestors of the people there now?

Beowulf's men flee
Cowardly vs. Brave
Except for Wiglaf and Beowulf, the men all flee.
Another idea is that it is better to die a hero than to live as a coward. Beowulf's men were cowardly, and maybe if they had fought rather than fleed, Beowulf wouldn't have died. This seems to be part of a "warrior code" Many people from the story (Beowulf, Wiglaf, etc) follow this. Characters who don't (Unferth, Beowulf's men) are cowardly and not nearly as successful or influential as Beowulf.
Beowulf continues fighting, even when he will definitely die.
Wiglaf
Wiglaf represents loyalty and persistence. He stays beside Beowulf until the bitter end. If Wiglaf didn't fight, then Beowulf would have lost.
