thomas was the son of a merchent he was not from a noble family

henry promoted becket to the role of chancellor
the two men became friends and they worked hard to improve the country
the old arcbishop died and henry persuaded becket to
take the job
very soon henry and thomas began to clash
their main argument was what should be done with the priests who had commited crimes

becket fled into excile
henry was fuming and tried to put becket away for many years
they met in 1169 to try and settle their differences
eventually they reconciled (they still didnt like each other tho) in december 1170

henry needed becket to perform a corination which only the archbishop of canterbury could do

as soon as becket returned home he began to assert his authourity
he was accused of bullying
he also complained to the pope about henry
henry was enraged
in a fiery rage the king/henry was reported to have shouted "will no one rid me of this turbulent priest "
four of henrys knights heard henry and thought it was their chance to impress the king
the first met becket and failed to arrest him because they where made to feel stupid
they went with the intention of arresting him
they pu there armour and swords on to go meet with becket again but this time struggle broke out between the knights and beckets priests eventually becket saw that it was getting to much and knelt down to pray one of the knights had had enough and struck becket with their sword murdering him in his own cathedral
becket the matyr
before becket was buried it was found that he was wearing clothes made of horse hair this was a sighn of penance
this led to becket being viewed a s a matyr
people claimed his dead body could perform miracles
in 1173 he was made a saint
