Peripheral Nervous System, INFO KEY - Coggle Diagram
Peripheral Nervous System
CRANIAL NERVES
Olfactory Nerve (CN I)
Sense of smell
Fascicles pass through cribriform plate - nasal mucosa - olfactory bulbs
Optic Nerve (CN II)
Vision
Arise from retinas, pass through optic canal, partly cross over at optic chiasma, synapse at thalamus
Oculomotor Nerve (CN III)
Raises eyelid, directing eyeball, constricts iris, controls lens shape
Ventral midbrain - superior orbital fissures - extrinsic eye muscles
Trochlear Nerve (CN IV)
Innervates extrinsic eye muscle (superior oblique)
Dorsal midbrain - superior orbital fissures - orbits
Trigeminal Nerve (CN V)
Pons - divisions of the face
Sensory impulses, supplies motor fibers for mastication
Abducens Nerve (CN VI)
Innervates lateral rectus muscle
Inferior pons - superior orbital fissures - orbits
Facial Nerve (CN VII)
Facial expression, parasympathetic impulses to lacrimal/salivary glands, taste
Pons - internal acoustic meatus - stylomastoid foramen - lateral aspect of face
Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CN VIII)
Sensory function; hearing, balance
Hearing receptors - equilibrium receptors - inner ear - internal acoustic meatus - brainstem at pons-medulla border
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX)
Innervates tongue and pharynx to swallow, parasympathetic fibres to parotid salivary glands, taste, carries impulses from pharynx, posterior tongue, carotid chemoreceptors/baroreceptors
Medulla - jugular foramen - pharynx
Vagus Nerve (CN X)
Swallowing, speech, parasympathetic activity to heart, lungs, abdominal viscera, carries impulses from thoracic/abdominal viscera, baroreceptors, chemoreceptors, taste buds
Medulla - jugular foramen - thoracic cavity
Accessory Nerve (CN XI)
Head, neck, shoulder movement (innervates trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles)
Ventral rootlets of medulla/C1-C6 region - foramen magnum - cranium - jugular foramina - trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles
Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII)
Innervates extrinsic/intrinsic muscles of tongue - tongue movement, swallowing, speech
Medulla - hypoglossal canal - tongue muscles
SPINAL NERVES
Intercostal Nerves (T1-T11)
Innervates: Skeletal Muscles
Travel in
intercostal spaces
between adjacent ribs
Cervical Plexus (C1-C4)
Innervates: Neck & Diaphragm Muscles and skin of neck, head, shoulders
Phrenic nerve originates from C4, contributing axons from C3 & C5, travels through thoracic cavity
Brachial Plexus (C5-T1)
Innervates: Pectoral Girdles & Upper Limbs
Major terminal nerves through arm/girdle = musculocutaneous, radial, medial, ulnar, axillary
Lumbar Plexus (L1-L4)
Innervates lower back and abdominal muscles
Split into anterior and medial divisions
Sacral Plexus (L4-S4)
Innervates muscles of buttock, legs, feet
Composed into anterior/posterior divisions
Coccygeal Nerves (Co1)
Originate from conus medullaris (terminal of spinal cord)
Innervate several pelvic organs
Subcostal Nerve (T12)
Arises below ribs
