LANGUAGE AND EDUCATION
THE LANGUAGE OF HOME, COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL
-
Language at school
Multi-grade classes, or multi-age classrooms, involve teaching learners of different ages and grades together. This approach supports individualized learning based on ability and exposes younger children to advanced language use, leveraging their language skills as resources for others.
A directive is a speech act prompting action, such as commands (e.g., "Shut the door"), requests (e.g., "Could you shut the door?"), and advice (e.g., "You should shut the door to keep the cat in").
Bridging the languages of home, community and school
"Funds of Knowledge" coined by Luis Moll and colleagues, denotes the knowledge, practices, and skills accumulated in households over generations. These resources can enhance learning when accessed by schools
"Legitimate language" in critical applied linguistics, refers to sanctioned language in a specific domain. While not explicitly used in schools, students quickly discern which language use is considered illegitimate.

LANGUAGE, TESTING AND ASSESSMENT
:pen:The field of testing and assessment in language and education is marked by increasing linguistic diversity in school populations, driven by the standards movement globally. The demand for tests, ranging from language proficiency assessments to subject knowledge evaluations, has surged. These tests pose linguistic challenges, including the choice of test medium and addressing different language requirements for varied assessment types, with implications for instruction improvement and international comparisons.
