Chem unit 1 review
Periodic table trends
Electron affinity
To the right of the periodic table it increases
Down the periodic table it increases
Electron affinity is the energy change that takes place when an element GAINS an electron
Isotope
Neucelar Radiation
Aplha
About
particles: positively charged
particles with the same structure as the
nucleus of a helium atom
Beta
negatively charged
particles identical to electrons
Gamma
a form of high energy
electromagnetic radiation
This is the most dangerous
Gamma rays have no charge and no mass so they can do whatever they want essentially because their not tied to anything
Also because of this they cant be stopped by charged particles canecling them out
Radioactive decay
The disinitgeration of unstable isotopes
The isotopes that decay to make neucelar radiation are radioisotopes
Mass Spectrometer
The mass spectrometer is used to determine the mass of an isotope
Sample enters from the top
Heater vaporizes the sample
Electron Beam Source
Ions accelerated
Then sir sample enters the magnet
Then the magnetic field deflects the ions and the first ones are the lightest ones and that tells us the mass
The dector does its thang
Radioactive isotope
this is when an isotope emits radiation and the element is unstable
Charged atom with same number of protons as a normal element
Has different # of neutrons
