Potiental Complication or risk concern (#1):
Respiratory FailureActions to Prevent:
- avoid any irritant agents that can damage lungs or making breathing diffucult (smoke, allergens)
- assess for signs of bacterial infection that could further impede breathing and cause respiratory failure
- maintain supplemental oxygen
- maintain drug regimen of bronchodilators and corticosteroids to allow for proper gas exchange
- use breathing techniques that keep alveoli open longer (pursed lip breathing)
Potential Complication or Risk Concern (#2):
Hypercapnia Actions to avoid:
- avoid smoking/second-hand smoke
- weight loss
- regular exercise (within patient's limits)
- maintain medication regimen: corticosteroids to help keep airway inflammation to a minimum and bronchodilators to open airways to allow the release of CO2
