The framework of placemaking
11 Principles of Placemaking
The community is the expert
• Create a place, not a design
• Search for partners
• You can see a lot by only observing
• Have a vision
• Start with visible quick wins that have an immediate effect
• Triangulate- connect the different elements with each other
• Expect objections from professionals (‘that is not feasible anyway’)
• Make use of support: people, examples etc.
• Money is not what matters
• You are never finished
Placemaking on different levels
Placemaking can be done on different levels. It can be as big as an area or neighborhood, but it can also be a specific street or square
Different elements of placemaking
Symbolic place
Meaning-symbols, icons, identity, narrative, storytelling
'Lived experience'
Creativity-patterns in daily life, routine, tempo
Physical place
meterials - buildings, urban form, design, public space etc.
Events and placemaking
Shift away from solely economic focus to more social aspects (cohesion within communities)
Often rooted in the DNA of cities, making use of history of the city or specific location ('storytelling')
(Relatively) small scale, focused on citizens of the city itself
Place branding
Competitive
differentiation of a location
Image of a place
Placemaking definition
Improving the quality of public space and the life of people who use it.
Placemaking is a multidimensional approach of programming, designing and managing public spaces. It builds on values, inspiration and the potential of local communities, with the intention to create public spaces that enhance the health, happiness and well being of its 'users' (PPS, 2015)
Space & Place
The difference between a space and a place is that a space is a concept that has no meaning and a place is a space in which meaning is added.
