ROSENHAN 1973 BEING SANE IN INSANE PLACES
AIM
to test the diagnosis system used by hospital staff to detect mental illness
to document the experiences of psychiatric hospitalisation
SAMPLE
the 12 hospitals being observed
the doctors, nurses, patients within the hospital
8 psuedo patients
3 women
5 men
fake names
NOT THE SAMPLE
EXPERIMENT 1
procedure
8 pseudo patients rang up the 12 hospitals
said they were hearing voices in their head
empty
hollow
thud
all of the pseudo patients were admitted
7 diagnosed with schizophrenia
1 diagnosed with manic depression
once admitted acted completely as they would out of hospital
results
once inside their normal behaviour was seen as symptoms of their illness
in the institutions for an average of 19 days with a range of 7 - 52 days
real patients recognised them as frauds
patients felt powerless and depersonalised
their labels stuck
THE MINI EXPERIMENT
the pseudo patients asked hospital staff a question
excuse me X could you tell me when I'll be presented at the staff meeting
professionals would often ignore them and treated in an off-hand manner
only 4% of pseudo patients received an answer out of the 185 times a question was asked
these findings were compared to responses to a young female asking for directions in a corridor
everyone answered her and treated in the correct manner
EXPERIMENT 2
procedure
many mental institutions critiqued Rosenhan's experiment and said it wouldn't happen in their hospital
rosenhan informed a large number of the hospitals that over the next 3 months a pseudo patient would be trying to gain admittance to test how rigorous their diagnosis procedure would be
in this time no pseudo patients tried to gain access
results
41 /193 patients were confidently judged as a pseudo patients by at least one staff member
23 / 193 patients suspected by one psychiatrist
19 / 193 patients suspected by one psychiatrist and one other staff member
