places with rich culture
heritage tourism
people travel to experience the different culture an understand the history of a place better by gaining insights of the different ways of life. museums, historical and national monuments usually attract tourists keen in the country's heritage.
eg. Machu Picchu, Peru is a UNESCO world heritage site and has 500 years old stone architectures, walls and terraces which draw tourists interested in the Inca civilisation. its spectacular view of the peruvian andes attracts about 1.5 mil visitors each year.
film-induced tourism
tourists visit places that are featured in films to understand how certain scenes were filmed and how the place inspired parts of the film.
eg. The Sound of Music movie was filmed in Salzburg, Austria where its beautiful scenery of the mountains and lakes attracted over 300k tourists going for the tour around the city each year.
pilgrimage tourism
people travel to sacred places to take part in religious activities that are important to their beliefs and faith. major religious holidays or events may play a role in drawing large crowds to the sites.
eg. the annual Hajj to Mecca, saudi arabia, is the world's largest pilgrimage and is a religious duty of every physically able muslims. this event draws over 3mil pilgrims of which 1.8mil are international tourists

places of conflict
people visit places that are often associated with deaths and tragedies like battlefields, memorials and museums. the people may include survivors, family members of the victims and people who simply want to know more about the event.
eg. Ground Zero, nyc usa, is the former location of World Trade Centre which collapsed on 11 sep 2001 after a terrorist attack, killing more than 3000 people. Many people visit the memorial there after the tragedy to pay their respect.
