Population Dynamics
-
Population Demographics
Demography - statistical study of population changes over time (birth rates, death rates, life expectancies)
Life tables - provides important information about the life history of an organism and life expectancy of individuals at each age.
-
-
Survivorship Curves
-
Type I Curves
- have low mortality in the early and middle years, with most deaths occurring in older individuals.
- seen in organisms that produce few offspring and provide good care to increase their survival chances.
Type II Curves
- have relatively constant mortality throughout the lifespan, with equal likelihood of death at any age.
Type III Curves
- have high mortality in early ages, with lower mortality rates for individuals that reach advanced years.
- Organisms with type III survivorship typically produce large numbers of offspring but provide little or no care for them.
