Figurative Language
Hyperbole
Describe something in an extremely exaggerated way.
Example: "I've been waiting forever!"
Alliteration
Example: Seashell seashells on the sea shore.
A sentence or phrase with words that start with the same letter or sound.
Idiom
Example: "My team was on cloud 9 after we won our baseball game!"
A group of words whose meaning isn't understood from their literal meaning.
Metaphor
Example: "She is a ray of sunshine."
A comparison that is not literally true. (Doesn't use "like" or "as")
Onomatopoeia
Example: Boom, splash, hiss, snap, swish, honk, buzz, etc.
A sound written out as a word.
Personification
Giving human qualities to nonhuman things.
Example: "The stars danced in the night."
Simile
Example: "He is as fast as a cheetah."
Comparing two unlike things using "like" or "as".
