Control in Nothing to Envy
LEADER AS GOD-LIKE FIGURE
CENSORSHIP
Cannot be ungrateful for what they don't have - Slogan - "We are happy" poster - implies you should not even think about the bad. Implied censorship of thoughts.
1984 - Thoughtcrime
Jun-Sang's one TV channel. Makes it so they can't see the outside world. Government controls everything that goes on that channel - so they don't get any bad intentioned thoughts
One channel on telescreen - only option in 1984
connects to propaganda about the war in 1984 - everything is going great, there are no issues. Even other topics they reported on were about things that were going well.
TERROR
electric wave inspection bureau (J-S) comes in at random times to make sure people are watching the channels they should be watching - keeps people on edge
similar to 1984 Thought Police who just pop in whenever. UNCERTAINTY is terrifying on its own.
SURVEILLANCE
blackboard poster about the Leader and the song - "We have gone to the forest... over the hills... kill the Japanese soldiers" - keep control over their ideas about who the enemy is
similar to posters of Big Brother and who they're at war with; Eurasia is bad
cartoons where the American soldiers are drawn with beakish noses - similar to 1984 posters that caricatured Eurasian soldiers. Make citizens scared of them; they won't want to leave the country.
SURVEILLANCE
Electric Wave Insp. Bureau - monitor whatever the people are watching on their TVs.
telescreens in 1984
INDOCTRINATION
Each school has a classroom with a special resource - "Kim Il-Sung Research Institute" - purpose is to teach about how great the Great Leader is
would sing songs and recite poems in praise - kids sing songs, etc in 1984
Miran's mom remembered the Americans as good people - gave her gum, but her daughter said they were bad and was surprised she wasn't killed or tortured. Shows that what Miran is taught in school is different from the truth.
2+2 = 5 because when Winston is getting tortured, O'Brien was trying to push into his head 2+2=5 and there's no other answer. Indoctrination demands that people deny their reality.
Books, poems, songs, math problems - all relate to something political, either praising govt or hating on Americans/Japanese
1984 - Spies
FORCED PATRIOTISM & RITUALS
Kim Il-Sung research institute - forcing children to go to this special place that's almost like a prayer room. Makes them to be proud of country, worship leader.
1984 - 2 Minutes Hate - they all hate on the same thing, and then relax with BB - "My saviour"
teachers have to play an accordion to play the "Nothing to Envy" song - forces the teachers to listen and have the song
SCAPEGOATING AND COMMON ENEMY
use math problems to show kids that other countries are bad without saying that other countries are bad - ex. "How many American soldiers were killed" - assumes they kill American soldiers.
assumption that we are at war with Eastasia and always have been
