Substance Dualism
-
- There are two types of substance in the universe- mental and physical
- The mind is a mental substance; a thinking thing that lacks extension
- The body is a physical substance; a non-thinking thing that has extension
- The mind is an ontologically distinct substance from the body
- Cartesian dualism claims that the mind does not depend on the body in order to exist
Leibniz's principle of the indiscernibility of identically
- You cannot have numerical identity without qualitative identity
- i.e. if two things are identical then they share all their properties and so are indiscernible
