DIRECT DEMOCRACY, REPRESENTITVE DEMOCRACY - Coggle Diagram
DIRECT DEMOCRACY
Advantages
- Increase voter turnout, with a more direct role and infulence people may make more of a point with voting.
-Avoids political deadlock. eg first past the post vote in 2011. Allows decisions to be made quickly.
- Adds legitimacy to the results, its what the people want. Can not complain that their issues are not being listened too.
- purest form of democarcy.
Disadvantages
- Too binary, for example the brexit referendum was too complex to be answered with a yes or a no.
- some issues are to complex for the public to understand, should be left to the experts ( not us)
- People are too easily swayed by emotion, the media to vote in complex important matters.
- Unpractical and impossible to encorporate on a country our size. People would be voting so much that votes become 'wasted' people. considering their votes less as they become more of a chore.
-
REPRESENTITVE DEMOCRACY
Advantages
- Letting the experienced people take charge.
- The gap between us and politicans it creates is good because it encourages politcal stability and makes us see a balanced society.
- Realistic. It is just not practical to expect our society to function where every single person votes individually for every single issue.
-it also encourges the people who do not see them selves as 'politics people' to engage in politics from a far.
- Also stops potentially uneducated/ uninformed members of the pubic having far too much political influence.
- Allows for quicker more efficent decision making.
Disadvanatges
- Not the purest form of dedmocary and not all power is with the people
- Arguably Mps personal situations to not align and or retpresent with the majorty population.
- Mps are normally wealthy high class individuals that differ from the majority of the population.
- How are they suppoused to make decisions for us if they do not know what we want?
- The people are at a 'gap' with their government who will ultamitley be at the top of them all their lives. There is no power to the individual.
