In 1068 Edwin and Morcar fled from William's court. They went North and were joined by many others for the revolt, all protesting against his rule. Some of the supporters were the Lord of Powys, the Sherriff of Yorkshire, Earls Waltheof, Gospatric of Northumbria and Edgar Aethling. William went to meet them and along the way he made many castles including at Warrick a key city in Mercia. He made another at Nottingham. Edwin and Morcar were quick to surrender as soon as William seized Warwick. The citizens at York sent Hostages to show support, followed by the Northumbrian rebels. Edgar fled North to Scotland, where Malcolm III took him in. The others begged forgiveness.
