Housing affects the natural environment
Use of natural resources
Natural environment need to be extracted and used to meet housing needs of people
The land that the housing is on originally part of the natural environment
As population within cities grows, more resources like food, water and building materials are needed
The resources demands housing developments and growing populations lead to negative environmental impact
Environmental pollution
As cities grow, more houses are needed by people
This will lead to pollution of the natural environment
Pollution —> introduction of substances that do not normally belong in the environment and if not managed, can lead to harmful effects on plants, animals and humans
3 main types of pollution includes, land air and water pollution
Water pollution
Surface run off from the streets carries oil, ruby, heavy materials and other contaminants from vehicles
Untreated or poorly treated sewage can be low in dissolved oxygen and high in pollutants such as faecal coliform, nitrates, phosphorus
Land pollution
Contamination of the soil by factory chemicals or sewage and other waster water/by garbage an industrial waste from mining and other forms of industry
With increasing population, more waste are produced
Even with incineration of wastes, the leftover materials still needs to be disposed off
Air pollution
A major problem in cities
Caused by human activities like burning of fossil fuels for energy use and production and emissions from industries and motor vehicles
Can affect people negatively such as respiratory problems like asthma
How does access to housing affect people?
Good quality of housing
Positive consequences
Provision of basic needs
Shelter: This helps to reduce issues of homelessness
Access to sanitation: This helps to reduce the outbreak of diseases and improves people’s well being and overall health
Access to water and electricity: This helps people to carry out their daily domestic activities for basic survival
Presence of amenities
Amenities are desirable or useful features of a place that make life easier for its residents
Amenities makes the life in the neighbour convenient
Presence of communities
Housing developments have spaces for social gatherings
Allows residents to get to know people in their neighbourhood, make friends and seek companionship
