Chapter 1
2.A pilot was released after flying over the community. "Needless to say, he will be released, the voice had said..." pg.3
- Lilly is upset about a boy from another community who visited and cut in front of her on the slide. "I felt so angry at him. I made my hand into a fist, like this." pg.7
- Jonas is feeling apprehensive about the upcoming ceremony of the twelves. "It's the ceremony I'm feeling apprehensive about." pg.12
- Father is a nurturer and is worried about a certain child who is not sleeping well. he considers taking the child home in order to take better care of it. "They had heard father complain about the nightcrew before." pg.10
chapter 8
When all the Twelves have gotten their assignments, the Elder addresses the fact that she skipped Jonas. She apologizes, and everyone ritualistically chants, "We accept your apology." She goes on to say that Jonas has not been assigned; rather, he has been selected.

Chapter 9
His parents hesitate to talk about it, and finally reveal that it was a girl, but they can't say her name. In fact, her name can never be used ever again in the community, even for new babies.
Jonas asks what happened to the girl, but his parents report that they never saw her again after the "failure."
That night at dinner, Jonas asks his parents about the "failed" receiver from ten years ago.
As the crowd go out of the auditorium, Jonas meets up with Asher, who hesitates a moment before agreeing to ride back home with his friend.

Jonas learns that release is death, not a peaceful experience.

Chapter 15
The Giver asks Jonas to take the memory, and Jonas willingly does so.
The Giver gives Jonas memories of both happiness and sadness, including sledding, sunburn, Christmas morning, and war.

chapter 2
The different December Ceremonies that occur in the community. Jonas is about to have his Ceremony of Twelve where he will be given his assignment for the rest of his life. He is apprehensive about the assignment or job he will receive.
chapter 3
Jonas and his family receive Gabriel, a new child Jonas' father must look after for a while. Lily, Jonas' sister says she wants to be a birthmother but is persuaded to seek another job. Jonas wonders about the apple he saw change the month before.
chapter 4
Jonas and his friends Asher and Fiona as they do their last volunteer work before the Ceremony of Twelve. They volunteer at the House of the Old.
