Damani Polk Period 2 Anatomy Integumentary System
Major Functions of skin
Protective covering; prevents many substances and pathogenic
microorganisms from entering body
• Protection of underlying tissues
• Houses sensory receptors
• Conducts part of the process for making vitamin D
• Body temperature regulation, via sweat gland activation, and
vasodilation or vasoconstriction of dermal blood vessels
• Healing of wounds
Accessory Organs
Sweat Glands - Secretory structure in the dermis and a straight duct that connects this acinar structure to the surface of the epidermis
Sebaceous Glands - Microscopic glands found in your hair follicles that secrete sebum
Nails - Hardened plated of keratin, and it's surrounding tissues that make up the distal
Hair - The shaft is the visible part of the hair that sticks out of the skin
Layers of Skin
Epidermis
: thin, outer layer of stratified squamous epithelium
•
Dermis:
thicker, inner layer of connective tissue, blood vessels, nervous tissue, and smooth muscle
Subcetaneous Layer
: Layer underneath dermis, consisting of areolar and adipose tissues
Skin Cancer and ABCDE rule
A- Asymmetrical (Its Halves are not mirror images of each other). B-Border (The boundary of a surface or object). C-Color. D-Diameter(The distance from any point on the periphery of a surface, body, or space to the opposite point) E-Evolving(To undergo biological evolution, as in the development of new species or new traits within a species)
Skin Cancer- Skin cancer can be caused by to much exposure to ultrraviolet (UV) rays. To lower your risk of getting skin cancer you can protect your skin from the UV by useig artificial sources like tanning beds
Degrees of Burns and Rule of nine
1st degree burn
- Only effects the epidermis or outer layer of the skin, could be painful, dry, redness, or blister
2nd degree burn-
A burn that effects the epidermis and part of the dermis layer. Blisters and could be swollen and painful
Full Thickness Burn
- Burn that burns through the epidermis, and the dermis layer
3rd degree burn-
Destroys the dermis and epidermis. Damages the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons. May appear white or charred
Other disorders associated with the integumentary system
Cold Sores - Certain strains of the herpes simplex virus (HSV)
Hives - The release of histamine, bradykinin, leukotriene C4 and other vasoactive substances from mast cells and basophils in the dermis
Warts- The viruses can enter the skin through small cuts and cause extra cell growth
