Chapter 15: Research Proposals
15.1: General Overview
Grant writing is important part about being a scientist because this is how you use a topic of interest that a specific company is also interested in investing in.
15.2: Components and Format
Follow all instructions thoroughly
Most companies have a layout of how they want the proposal written and presented
Sections to include
Abstract, Specific aims, Background, Research design, and Significance/Impact
Other sections may include budget/innovation
15.3: Abstract
Summary should include: Background, unknown/problem, overall objective, general strategy, and significance
First and last sentence are important
First sentence should be short drawing the reader in
Last sentence should included why the proposal is important
15.4: Specific Aims
Written as a list describing what steps should be taken to achieve goals
Highlight or boldface specific aims as their listed
15.5: Background
Informs and provides readers with known knowledge and results about topic
15.6: Research Design
Provide detailed description of approach to be taken to achieve each specific goal
Also known as Experimental approach, Methodology, or Strategy
Create subsections for each specific aim: Heading(Specific aim), Experimental design, Analysis, Expected results
15.7: Impact and Significance
Make an impact; finish proposal strong with final paragraph stating the overall impact and significance
15.8: Additional Proposal Components
Additional information is dependent on the company or facility the proposal is being written for.
Additional information includes: budget, CV, reference letters, animal experimentation
If budget is needed, be realistic with costs of equipment, travel, materials, and special facilities needed for certain expierments/research.
