Topic 11( Blood Circulation)
healthy circulatory system
waste substances (e.g., carbon dioxide) produced by our body cells can be removed
from our body.
oxygen and digested food substances can be transported to all of our body cells;
circulatory system is made up of:
Blood
transports substances, such as oxygen, digested food and carbon dioxide, around
our body.
Blood vessels
are tubes that carry blood around our body.
Heart
a muscular pump that pumps blood around our body.
What is blood made up of
red blood cells;
Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body.
plasma
• Plasma transports digested food substances and waste substances (e.g., carbon dioxide)
in the body.
White blood cells
White blood cells protect our bodies against foreign substances such as bacteria and
viruses, by destroying them.
White blood cells also produce antibodies that help the body to destroy bacteria and
viruses during an infection. This keeps our bodies healthy.
• White blood cells can detect and reject foreign tissues or organs in our body. This is not
desirable if a transplanted tissue or organ (e.g., kidney) were to be rejected by the body.
