Enlargement of the thyroid gland and excessive metabolic rate of the body. Weight loss, agitation, restlessness, sweating, heat intolerance, diarrhea, tachycardia, heart palpitations, tremors, fine hair, oily skin, irregular menstrual cycles, and weakness are common findings. Diagnosed based on patient's H&P and physical exam. Treatment is aimed at reducing thyroid hormone levels usually through radioactive iodine, medications that block thyroid hormone production and sometimes surgery.
