Tempo/Texture/Dynamics: Changing more than once within a piece and perhaps extremely?
Melody: Angular or disjunct/ fragmented (not smooth flowing), based on motifs.
Tonality/Harmony: Use of much dissonance, unusual/ extended chords, modes instead of major/minor.
Instruments: Unusual combinations, electronic instruments etc.
Structure: Not adhering to traditional form
Rhythm/Metre: Metre (time sig.) could change several times, irregular metre (5/4, 7/4), unusual rhythms

Metamorphosis (Gradually changing the melody each time it is repeated)
Phasing (Playing an identical but slightly shorter motif against a longer one until they come back into phase)
Rhythmic displacement (Accenting different parts of a rhythm on each repeat for rhythmic interest)
Static harmony (Slowly changing from one chord to another by changing one note at a time)
Note subtraction
(Shortening the motif by a note each time it is repeated)
Note addition
(Extending the motif by a note each time it is repeated)
