2.3 Classification of
network
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A network that covers a large geographic area such as a city, states, countries, or the world using a communications channel that combines many types of media such as telephone lines, cables, and radio waves
Cost of setup :
Cost of setting up a WAN is higher compared to a LAN as it requires more planning, more hardware and leasing long distance transmission lines
Ownership:
Multiple/shared/distributed ownership.
Areas of
coverage:
The area covered by a WAN is large, usually covering two or more cities, states, countries or continents.
Example of WAN
(Where WAN is applied)
➢ Email systems, such as Gmail, Microsoft Outlook
➢ Online banking systems
➢ Cloud services
Advantages & disadvantages of WAN
Disadvatages
Lower data transfer speeds compared to LANs
Higher infrastructure and operating costs
Complex network configurations and require skilled IT professionals to design, implement, and manage.
Advantages
Allow wider communication across different cities and countries.
enable efficient data backup and disaster recovery.
WANs can be used to connect devices that use different types of networking protocols.
Example picture of WAN
Network is classified based on its
coverage area.
Local Area Network (LAN)
Local Area Network is a network that connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area such as a room, a floor or a building
Ownership:
Single ownership like an organization or a single individual
Cost of setup :
Cost of setting up a LAN is usually low as compared to a WAN as it is localized over smaller geographic area and does not require additional devices.
Areas of
coverage:
It covers limited area geographically

Example of LAN
(Where LAN is applied)
➢College Computer Lab Network
➢Home network
➢KMPP Network
Advantages & disadvantages of LAN
Disadvantages
Limited Connectivity: LANs provide limited connectivity beyond the local area.
Limited Geographic Coverage: A LAN has a limited geographic coverage area, usually limited to a specific building or site
If the central device fails, it can lead to downtime and loss of connectivity for all connected devices within the
LAN.
Advantages
LAN provide faster data transfer
rates compared to WANs
LANs have lower latency compared to WANs. With shorter distances between devices the delay in transmitting data across a LAN is minimal
LANs provide greater control and security over network resources.
