How significant are the real and theoretical consequences of nihilism on the political world?
Introduction
Why is the extent of care humans have for one another important ?
It is how society progresses
e.g. This can be seen through people getting vaccinated (covid-19 jabs), people being complacent into lockdowns (again, covid-19 lockdowns) and respecting laws too
Ensures safety for society as a whole
There's a lower risk of harm. People inherently want too feel safe, that is why people agree to democracy
Makes sure future generations don't suffer
Like climate change, for example, recently Rishi Sunak and the delay on the ban of petrol and diesel cars (BBC)
Morality in politics
The real consequences
Theoretical consequences
that being the growth in nihlism could ahvea direct link to radicalism
Seen with Nazism and in other areas of politics like the Russian Anarhicst movemnt
Nihilism
A definite definition must be used
"The rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless."
why is it problematic?
The rejection of moral principles can lead to extremity. This can be seen in Nazi beliefs as an example
Developed as a response of atheism and now has been applied to politics. This can be seen as bad as it is giving a bias and also encourages, in theory, a lack of care
Conclusion
The historical accounts are most impactful. This is due to the fact that they have already happened and the consequences can be seen today
for example, how Nazism still exists and Nihilism is still used to support it
The damaging affects of nihilism have not veen erased
“Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it” is said by American philosopher George Santayana. This is more relevant than ever
The use of nihilism in politics can be prevented, future generations can be changed
must be taught the history of political philosophy so the understadning of it is clear and would lead to events not being as misconstrued.
Nihilism is not a necessary bad thing, it just cannot to large extremes
Moral issues have still occurred despite the existence of nihilism. Is it purely to blame? no, it is the interpretations if nihilism like existential nihilism which van lead to worse issues
By telling people that nihilism is wrong will only encourage more people to turn to it. The moral code is only minorly flawed at points but it does stand well and relates to together philosophies like absurdism.
Real Consequences
How Nietzsche became "The Nazi Philosopher"
Hitler gifter Mussolini a present of all of Nietzches work
Nietzsche did not align with Nazi ideals
His anti-sematic claim of "slave Morality" was actually him the culture not the people
still controversial
E.G. Women and purity culture, Leviticus 12,15, 18, and 20
Used to justify Nazi Belief. Just like America respects their founding fathers or we may look at Hobbs Or Locke, Nazis viewed Nietzsche the same way
Baeumler even claimed that Nietzsche had contributed to the rise of Hitler
Was not German nationalist, had claimed that the "German Blood was strong" in a satirical way
His sister was the fascist
The Superman concept and the rise of the Aryan race
Consequences on the Nazis and Fascists
Persecution of minorities: 1933-1945
Holocaust
Auschwitz
Dachau
Anti-Semitism still seen today
e.g. 2,255 anti-Jewish hate incidents in 2021
Oppression of Women
Religious Persecution
Hypothetical Consequences
Growth of Nihilism in the public eye
The mental health crisis' we se today have people turning to philosophy for help. Philosophical be argued as a form of self-help so it is no surprise people align themselves with it. Especially through hard times, people often do align themselves with Nihilism
Seen on TikTok but most notably the debate has been occurring over Twitter
Leads down the alt-right pipeline
growth of radcalism
Theocratic States VS Secular States
Theocratic States (like Yemen, Vatican City and Sudan) use religion to base their moral codes. Though it's argued that religious morality takes too much precedent and can lead to people not being free.
For example, Women must be modest in clothing at all times
Theocratic states have a sense of morality to them, whether it is good or bad at least there is a moral development
A rejection of Secular States means that people start to use other philosophy (for example Nihilism) to develop the country
Lack of critical thinking- Nihilism if taken on face value seems extremely pessimistic. Though that can be true, its important to note that people can only come to that conclusion if they've engaged in their own research.
No future generation to assist major world issues
For example, Climate Changes. People may start to just accept it for what it is and then there is no active method of preventing it.
A lack of care for other issues, for example Violence against Women
For example, how with rape, certain cases of vandalism would have longer sentences than convicted rapists
If there is no fear of God or any other moral repercussions, who is to say that there will not be a rise? The wets Laws are built upon lots of Christian thinking so if that was removed then it is probable there would be a rise.
However, rape still happens today. who is to say that a growth of Nihilism would directly result to this?
There are Genocides still occurring today in places like Yemen. Has people just purely not caring ( a direct link back to nihilism) resulting in dire consequences?
If No-one cares then will there ever be a solution? Are there too many Genocides that we are are of that dealing with one deems the other ones as inferior?
Other potential bad consequences include: New, prejudiced legislations; Genocides; Increase in Hate Crimes; violence against all gender but possible increase seen in women; persecution
Real Consequences: a "Terroristic Philosophy"
Russian radicals would embrace Nihilism. It rejected the classical political and moral thinking so it became a theory used.
Originally used in the sense of liberation, sexually, for those poorer in society and personal autonomy. This was back int he 1860s.
Ivan Turgenev, popular writer- The movement was seen as dirty, proof that peolpe were influenced by it
The Leading Russian Anarchist, Peter Kropotkin wrote about the influence that nihilism had on him and the revolution in his memoir
Anarchism is based as all institutions of law are broken down, meaning no-one can protect those most venerable in society
Actual proof that there is nihlism in politics
adopted by he many and not the few
Popular with the surfs, influenced the anarchy movement. People found the appeal in the philosophy
Influence of modern nihilism
Jordan Peterson
His impact on the younger, more vunerable on the internet. His talks on self-help and where he stands with nihlism (negativly)
Major influence on the internet due to him having a substantial audience
right-wing views, "Woke Mob", owns "SJW", believes that the left are trying to indoctrinate 'your children', made a platform from gaslighting his audeince
Does he accuratly critique nihilism? Very lucid is his description of politilcal nihilism and seems to ignore it as a genuine issue
Major leading voice at the moment , controvertial
Critics of it, is there a cure towards political nihilism
