Against Social Media & Narcissism
Counter
Used for communication
Many better or identical alternatives including texting, calling, talking
To say it is more convenient to use in app DMs is another way of saying "peak-laziness"
Difficult to unimplemented
He might say that Social Media has become to big apart of our lives to just get rid of it.
I personally would very heavily disagree with that. If you will miss someone so much just because you cannot communicate on social media, then go speak to them in real life, or cut them out of yours like the hundreds of generations before us.
Entertainment
Social media is bad stimulus because we lose all our real connections to the world
Recall to the beginning of the year, Mr. Thompson himself has said we're all losing the ability to understand real conversations and emotion
News source
Many more useful and effective news sources
car radio, television news, news paper, emails
Our feeds are so personalized that we forget there is a whole other world around us but we might never know because most people don't care
Arguments
Suicide Rates
Suicide rates have spiked and continued to rise every year since 2012 which is the same year vine was released.
Suicide is the 2nd highest cause of death among 10-14 yo and 25-34 yo, 3rd highest among 15-24 yo
Suicide can be directly corelated to social media usage as the majority of ages on platforms such as: Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, and Snapchat fall under the same ages where suicide rates are so high
Over-estimating self worth
Everyone desires more likes and more followers to gain more attention and popularity.
Imagine being famous on social media and then one day nothing. No likes, losing followers, and people stop talking about you. the first thing you'll think is why?
People will assume they deserve to gain popularity even if they shouldn't which could make someone depressed or angry or jealous of someone else
The jealousy of someone on social media is what keeps driving us further and further into an endless cycle until you stumble upon someone who might envy you. And then the cycle once again repeats
Depression
Since 2017, Depression rates have risen 25.5% for ages 18-29 which is the highest increase among any demographic across the united states
Statistically, the younger age groups have higher rates of depression, and as you'll all agree, it is the younger generations that use technology more on a day to day basis and have more experience with online communication.
Intent vs. Impact
Lack of emotion or understanding of emotion can lead to social issues
Picture going to a party or get together at a friends house. Maybe a few drinks are involved, some loud music, and then someone decides to start taking photos. Now imagine applying for a job or post secondary education, How valuable are you to them if they believe that you are always partying and not focusing on more important parts of life
