Hypothesis is a EDUCATED GUESS based on existing knowledge & theory. Null or alternative hypothesis.
Conceptual framework is a VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF RELATIONSHIPS between variables and concepts in the study.
Variables are ANY MEASURABLE FACTOR that a researcher controls, and manipulates. These can be classified into roles, value on a scale, and scale of measurement.

Scales of Measurement
Nominal is a naming variable, for identification purposes such as gender, sex, class number, house number.
Ordinal is a naming variable + ranking, such as Top 10, Educational attainment, Hottest to coldest.
Interval is a naming + ranking + fixed unit of measurement, such as age, IQ, scores.
Ratio is a naming + ranking + fixed unit + absolute zero, such as budget, volume, population.

Research is a SYSTEMATIC INVESTIGATION using the skills in critical thinking, instruments, and procedures to obtain an adequate solution to a problem.
Research starts with a problem; and ends with a problem. Once a study solves the problem, other questions and limitations will arise and be left unanswered.
Quantitative explains, controls, and predicts events through numerical data. Qualitative explains and gains insight from events through narrative data.
